DIY Bookcases – A Home Office Update

Hi everyone! I hope your Valentine’s Day was great whatever you did. We had a fun family night going on a treasure hunt, making homemade heart-shaped pizzas (which is super fast and yummy!), and watching a movie. My hubby even got me a beautiful bouquet:

Yes, he knows me well! Lol :-)

So, today I am excited to just go ahead and share the bookcases I built for our office. Despite not having everything to “style” them, despite not having quite the time to share all of the details {which I documented and will share!}, and despite realizing, once again, that most of the time designing and decorating a room takes time….usually much more time than you want it take! According to my plans, I should be done with the office AND our master bedroom by now! But life happens and you pick your priorities. :-)

I really, really tried to find some used bookcases on Craigslist to flank the window of our office, but after searching and searching for a few weeks, I knew I would just be happier going the DIY route. Most standard bookcases are at either 30″ wide or a skinnier 18″ wide and then not so tall. I was hoping to use bookcases that were 24″-27″ maximum (due to the space from the window trim and base trim) and up to 7′  high since we have 9′ ceilings upstairs. You just can’t find those kind of dimensions in a matching set on Craigslist. I was just a bit too picky, and maybe because I knew that I COULD build what I wanted if nothing turned up.

So, here’s what we did!

I just used 1 x 10 and 1 x 12 whitewood boards, base trim, and crown molding.  This is the first time I’ve built something that has adjustable shelving and crown molding! Compound miter cuts freak me out a bit, but I did it! Yay me. ;-)

You want to know one of my favorite parts???

THE BACK!!! I absolutely LOVE it!!!!

I designed it to be interchangeable with fabric or even wallpaper.

Right now it is wrapped in Ron-Loc Muslin {my fave fabric ever, seriously},

but I can’t wait to share more pictures of it with other backgrounds!

I was really pleased with the finish, which was DIY Steel Wool and Vinegar Weathering Stain followed by Minwax Whitewash Pickling Stain. Pictures of that process coming too. :-)

Still working on the shelves and organizing.

I can’t wait to show the whole room to you!

On another note…..

I’ve been feeling the need to take the next couple of weeks off of blogging and social media.  I have some greater responsibilities that need much more of my time and unfortunately, I feel like I would just end up a sleep deprived woman expelling watered-down low quality blog posts about who knows what “just to blog”.

Seriously….

You deserve better than that.

SO, I’m not leaving or anything – just taking a couple weeks to take care of other things.

Because of this, I don’t have any guests lined up and everything will be pretty quiet. BUT, I will be back March 4th!

Thank you for understanding! You all are the best!

Have a great weekend!

~Anneke
