Bench for Mason

When I recently had my blog page redesigned, I really wanted to incorporate giving back. For one, because it’s truly important to me. And two, I think that everyone has a responsibility in giving back to others, which can be done in a variety of ways when you use your skills and abilities.

Last year, my husband and I ran the Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon as part of a team to support the raising of funds toward Cure JM.  A close friend of ours had a daughter (Tessa) that had been diagnosed with this disease. Our way of giving back was through the half marathon and an incredible auction held at the Space Needle. You can see more details about that here.

At that auction, I was able to donate a couple of spa benches (plans found here) of which the response was great! Yay! SO, now, over a year later, my friend came to me and asked if I could donate again, this time for a CureJM fundraiser in honor of a young boy named Mason, also diagnosed with JM, who passed away earlier this year due to complications from the disease. You can watch a video in honor of Mason here. Although I never met him or his family personally, he’s seem like a very inspiring boy!

So today I share with you the bench I made for the fundraiser happening later this month. I think it would be more than appropriate to name this bench after Mason…….2/25/2002-6/19/2012.

Here is the bench unfinished.

Then I used a NEW product (at least new to me) I picked up at Home Depot.

Let me tell you, I LOVE this!!!

From the first brush stroke, I was in heaven. Wow.

1 coat, dries in 1 hour, 75% more coverage.

Varathane ain’t messin’ around!

It’s also the first time I’ve used WATCO Wipe-On Poly, and it too

was an easy product to work with with a nice end result. Yay for that! :-D

Then spread the word! Half the battle to a cure is getting the word out there. If there’s one thing you can do, please share this video with your family, friends and colleagues to help spread the word about this disease in the hopes of finding a cure some day very soon!

If you are on twitter, you can tweet:

RT- find a #cure 4 #juvenilemyositis. @curejm by donating, sharing, & bringing #hopeforkids w/ #JM

Or share the video or webpage on Facebook, through e.mail, however you can.

It will take less than a minute. Donate 5 bucks or more if you can. You will make the difference in the life of a child.

If anything, please take the time to share this video with your friends and family to help spread the word about this disease in the hopes of finding a cure some day very soon!

thanks for the inspiration! I needed to find something for my son’s bedroom… he needs a narrow Lego table with storage underneath. I am going to build it 48″ long (with a support in the middle) so we can put two 22″galvanized oval tubs underneath. Thanks for sharing the plans!

  2. Aaawww. Thank you Anneke for sharing our story of our dear Tessa and spreading the word about Juvenile Dermatomyositis and Cure JM. How nice of you to honor Mason with your talents. Thank you for helping all JM kids. You are a true friend!
